Legend Senior Living announces major expansion and renovation of Legend of Hutchinson

July 20th, 2021 | Press Releases

Legend Senior Living® today announced a major renovation of Legend of Hutchinson. The company acquired the residence two years ago. The senior living community, which offers independent living, assisted living and memory care, became the eighth in Kansas for the Wichita-based company. Located at 2416 Brentwood, Legend of Hutchinson will expand by more than 10,000 square feet with completion expected in late summer 2022.

New construction accounts for much of the expansion, with the addition of a movie theater, bistro, a combination country kitchen and meeting room, and a greatly expanded dining room. Remodeling and reallocation will add a medical suite and move the post office to a location that allows better access to this traditional center of community social life. Areas to be expanded by internal remodel include Memory Care activity space and the two main building entries. The interior areas, all corridors and commons, will see a total makeover of ceiling, floor, paint and finish, with exterior improvements including new windows and siding.

Wichita’s LK Architecture designed the expansion. Conco Construction is the contractor.

“We’re very excited about this major expansion and upgrading for the residents and families of the Legend of Hutchinson community,” said Paul Hansen, Vice President, Marketing. “Legend communities are designed for vibrant senior living and the opportunities to learn something new, meet new friends and neighbors and socialize. This puts the Hutchinson residence on par with communities we’re building from the ground up.” Hansen cited the new larger dining room, large community kitchen, meeting and recreation areas, and the popular first-run luxury movie theater as features that have become more important in senior living.

When the company acquired the Hutchinson residence, the emphasis was on continuity of operations to serve its residents. Taking the necessary time to guarantee the infrastructure and onboarding and training of staff, and to allow for the mitigation of the pandemic, have made this the optimum time for Legend to pursue a renovation of this scale.

“Legend residents expect the most active, socially enriched life that senior living can offer. Our community design plays a big part in that. We learn from every property we build and renovate. Every detail of a Legend community is evaluated on its capacity to contribute to our mission of serving seniors. Even the Post Office commands special consideration as a treasured place in the hearts and daily lives of seniors, just as it is the center of a hometown neighborhood,” said Hansen.

The last two years have been a period of growth for Legend. Legend of Colorado Springs opened in January, becoming the company’s 42nd community. Number 43 will open this fall with a new premier independent living residence in Jacksonville, Florida. The last acquisition was in 2017, when it acquired two Pennsylvania communities in Lancaster and Lititz.

“Our recent growth speaks to the reality that we are fulfilling our mission to serve seniors,” said Matt Buchanan, Executive Vice President of Legend Senior Living, on the acquisition of the Hutchinson property.

“As a privately held family business, Legend lives by the same principles of servanthood, compassion, and character, guided by faith upon which it was founded.”

Legend remains a family experience and a family business with two generations of Buchanans leading the company and guiding its future. Tim Buchanan, Matt’s father, is the founder and Chief Executive Officer.
